When the steam passes through plant material, it will collect some of the aromatic substances that are in the plant. Some of these substances dissolve in water, and some don’t. When the steam is cooled down and turns back to water, the non-water-soluble ‘oily’ substances quickly separate out from the water (like oil and vinegar). These substances collectively create the plant’s essential oil. However there are many water-soluble plant products which end up in the water, and this water is known as a ‘hydrolat’, ‘floral water’ or ‘hydrosol’. It is pure and simple product from steam distillation. It does not contain alcohol or preservative.
“Hydrolat is highly therapeutic in its own right and have a delicate nature and a light aroma. It is ideal for situations that require gentle aromatic care, and can be used for children, the elderly and many vets use them too. It is extremely healing for skin that is sensitive and irritated and makes a wonderful skin toner. It can help to reduce the appearance of acne scars or other various skin problems such as facial erythrosis, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, skin rash or irritations (inflamed skin). The hydrolat is not as concentrated as pure oil, but it still contains strong healing properties that make it an important part of any anti-aging ritual” [1]
SMELL
Hydrolat (Hydrosol) may smell lighter than the Helichrysum italicum essential oil because of the distillation process.
USES
Use topically on the face as a toner to help facial dryness or redness.
To use against irritations from outdoor pests, plants, and other environmental threats. Can be added to cool water and spritz on affected areas due to create a cool compress by soaking a cloth in the combined liquids and applying to area of concern..
